On July 2, 2019, Kenyan politician Martha Karua expressed her disappointment with the appointment of Michael Joseph as Safaricom's interim CEO.

Joseph, a 67-year-old veteran in the telecommunications industry, was chosen by the Safaricom Board to serve in the position following the death of Bob Collymore, who passed away on July 1, 2019, after a long battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

According to a statement by Safaricom, the board resolved to appoint Joseph as the interim CEO with immediate effect at a Special Board meeting of the Directors.

However, Karua took to Twitter to express her concerns, stating that the appointment of Joseph was an indication that the board lacks confidence in senior Safaricom officials.

“Not good at all, this looks like a vote of no confidence on all the senior guys @SafaricomPLC and talks volumes of a deficit in succession planning!” Karua tweeted.

Joseph, who previously served as Safaricom CEO from July 2000 to November 2010, is currently the Chairman of Kenya Airways Board.
