On July 2, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed Kalonzo Musyoka, the former Vice President of Kenya, as a Special Envoy to monitor peace in the Republic of South Sudan.
The appointment was made in a letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which stated that Mr. Musyoka's role is to further Kenya's commitment to shared prosperity in the region and to pursue lasting peace and security in South Sudan through the acceleration of the implementation of the Revitalised-Agreement on Conflict Resolution in South Sudan (R-AGROSS).
South Sudan, Africa's youngest nation, has remained unstable despite numerous peace agreements signed between President Salva Kiir and his arch-rival Riek Machar.
Mr. Musyoka's appointment comes at a time when South Sudan President Salva Kiir is on the last day of his two-day visit to Kenya, where he was hosted by President Kenyatta at State House.
Mr. Musyoka has a history of involvement in mediation efforts in South Sudan and Somalia, and his appointment sees him join Raila Odinga, the African Union special envoy for infrastructure, as key political figures in the country to receive nods from President Uhuru.
