On July 2, 2019, a group of leaders from Nyamira and Kisii counties gathered to endorse Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i for the presidency in the 2022 general elections.
The leaders, who included MPs, senators, and county assembly members, put aside their party and political differences to support Matiang'i's bid for the top seat.
According to the leaders, it was time for a Kisii to be voted as president in the country, and Matiang'i was the right candidate for the job.
Kitutu Chache MP Richard Onyonka, who was present at the gathering, said that Matiang'i had the support of the community and was ready to take on the challenge of becoming the country's next president.
West Mugirango MP Benson Kegoro started the debate by saying that Gusiis elected leaders should be keen on elevating Matiang'i to the top echelons of power, mentioning Chief Justice David Maraga, Solicitor General Ken Ogeto, and Matiang'i as the community's uniting factors.
Despite the show of support, not all leaders from the region were in agreement. Kitutu Chache North MP Jimmy Angwenyi sent his apologies, citing his support for other local leaders who were meaning good to the community.
