On July 1, 2019, Safaricom lost its CEO, Bob Collymore. In response, the company's board of directors appointed Michael Joseph as the interim CEO, a position he previously held from 2000 to 2010.

According to a statement, Joseph will serve in this capacity until the board makes a permanent appointment. The decision was made after a special board meeting called by Chairman Nicholas Ng'ang'a on Monday afternoon.

Michael Joseph's return to Safaricom marks a significant milestone in the company's history. During his tenure, he oversaw the growth of the subscriber base from less than 20,000 to over 16.71 million.

Joseph brings a wealth of international experience to the role, having worked on large telecommunications projects in Hungary, Australia, and the USA. He has also served on other boards, including Kenya Airways, where he was appointed Chairman in 2016.

As a Non-Executive Director at Safaricom since 2008, Joseph is no stranger to the company. His extensive experience in company start-ups, network implementation, and operation will undoubtedly be valuable assets in his new role.
