On July 1, 2019, Hong Kong marked the 22nd anniversary of its return to Chinese control with a day of protests that turned violent.

Initially, the demonstrations were mostly peaceful, but clashes with the police began early in the morning, with officers using batons and pepper spray against protesters outside a ceremony commemorating the anniversary.

Later in the day, a group of protesters stormed the legislature, using makeshift battering rams to destroy glass windows and doors as they made their way into the building.

As the protests escalated, the police were forced to observe from a distance, while thousands of others marched peacefully outside.

By the evening, protesters had occupied the legislature, spray-painting graffiti and defacing portraits of leaders.

The police eventually dispersed the protests in the early hours of Tuesday, July 2, 2019.
