On July 1, 2019, Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi, 92, left a military hospital in Tunis after a severe health crisis, according to his son's Facebook post.
Essebsi, a prominent figure in Tunisia since the 2011 overthrow of autocrat Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali, was taken to hospital on June 27, 2019.
His recovery comes as Tunisia continues to navigate its path to democracy, a process that began with the Arab Spring uprisings in 2011.
However, the country has faced challenges, including militant Islamist attacks, such as the June 27, 2019, suicide bombings in the capital Tunis that killed one police officer and wounded several others.
