On July 1, 2019, Safaricom announced the appointment of Michael Joseph as its interim CEO, a move that comes after the passing of Bob Collymore, who had been at the helm of the company since 2010.

Collymore died at his home on Monday following a long battle with cancer, leaving behind a rich legacy.

Joseph, a US citizen, has been the chairman of Kenya Airways since 2016 and had his term extended for another three years during the June 10, 2019 AGM.

During his previous tenure at Safaricom, which lasted from 2000 to 2010, Joseph oversaw significant growth, with subscribers increasing from about 16,000 to over 15 million and revenues growing to make Safaricom one of the largest publicly listed telephone companies in Africa.
