On July 1, 2019, Safaricom lost its CEO, Robert (Bob) William Collymore, who had been at the helm of the company since 2010. In a statement sent to newsrooms on July 2, 2019, Safaricom disclosed that a special board meeting was convened and it was resolved that Michael Joseph, a board member and former CEO of Safaricom, be appointed interim chief executive officer (CEO) with immediate effect.
Michael Joseph, who is currently the chairman of Kenya Airways (KQ) board, will hold this position until the board communicates in due course. He was Safaricom's boss until 2010 when he was succeeded by the late CEO, Bob Collymore.
Under Collymore's leadership, Safaricom's total revenue grew from KSh 83.96 billion in 2010 to KSh 240.3 billion, and the number of subscribers increased from 15.79 million.
Joseph's appointment as interim CEO comes as a surprise to many, given his previous tenure as CEO of Safaricom. However, the board's decision is seen as a necessary step to ensure continuity and stability in the company.
