On July 1, 2019, a disturbing incident occurred at the Lurambi Administration Police camp in Kakamega town. A 23-year-old woman, who claimed to have been stranded after running out of money to travel to her ancestral home in Malava sub-county, allegedly dumped a two-day-old baby at the camp.
According to Kakamega Central Sub County Police Commander David Kabena, the woman arrived at the camp at 4pm and sought assistance, claiming she had just been discharged from the Kakamega County Teaching and Referral Hospital. However, when Kabena left the report desk to look for money, the woman had disappeared, leaving behind the infant.
The officers at the camp rescued the baby and took it to the Kakamega Police Station for booking, before transferring it to the referral hospital for a medical checkup. Fortunately, the baby was pronounced healthy and was later handed over to a children's home in Bukura as the hunt for its mother continued.
Commander Kabena has appealed to the suspect to surrender to a police station near her, adding that her parents are also free to hand her over to the authorities. He assured that the police have leads and will arrest and charge the suspect if she fails to present herself.
