On July 2, 2019, a stunning upset occurred at Nyayo Stadium as Kenya Defence Forces' men's side, Ulinzi, defeated defending champions Black Mamba 22-20 in the Kenya Handball Federation Super Cup.
Nicholas Ireri scored seven goals to inspire the soldiers to their remarkable win, while Paul Ondara's six and Innocent Onyango's five goals for Mamba couldn't secure a win for the tournament favourites.
Ulinzi coach Kaviti Nyaga attributed their victory to confidence and resilience, stating, 'We were very determined and committed everything towards this game and I am happy we came out victorious. This shows that we have improved a lot and I believe we can go all the way and win the title.'
Black Mamba's counterpart, Martin Abunde, rued missed chances in the match, promising to come back stronger when the league resumes.
With this win, KDF will now face National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB-men) in the finals after they edged out last year's finalists Strathmore 23-13.
The finals are slated for July 6.
