On July 1, 2019, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha appointed Prof Asenath Sigot as the Acting Vice Chancellor at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (Mmust).

Prof Sigot, a professor of Nutritional Science, takes over from Prof Joseph Bosire who held the position since December 1, 2018. Prof Bosire's seven-month tenure ended on June 29, 2019.

Prof Sigot has previously acted as Vice Chancellor in 2013, after the end of tenure for the institution's first Vice Chancellor, Prof Barasa Wangila. She ensured a smooth transition of power and is expected to do the same in her new role.

"I was in Nairobi for a workshop when I received the news. It was a surprise to me. I am ready for the new role and pray to the Almighty God to guide my footsteps," Prof Sigot said in a statement.

Prof Sigot will hold the position for a period of three months until a substantive Vice Chancellor is installed. She will continue with the work of her predecessor, Prof Bosire, and ensure a smooth transition of power.

University unions have asked the Ministry of Education to fast track the recruitment of a substantive Vice Chancellor of the institution, citing the long delay as a cause of uncertainty and slowed down decision making.
