On July 1, 2019, Embu County took a significant step towards improving the livelihoods of its coffee farmers by partnering with local co-operative societies to construct a Sh130 million milling factory.
The Kavutiri Factory, nearing completion, will enable the county to mill and package coffee for direct exportation, thereby fetching higher prices for the commodity.
Embu Governor Martin Wambora expressed optimism about the project's potential to boost farmers' incomes, stating that once operational, the factory will allow farmers to reap maximum benefits.
"It will be officially opened next month so that coffee processing can start," Governor Wambora said during a farmers' meeting at the Kenya School of Government in Embu town.
He urged farmers not to give up on coffee farming due to poor pay, assuring them that prices will improve once the factory starts operating.
