On a two-day State Visit, South Sudan President Salva Kiir met with his Kenyan counterpart President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House in Nairobi on Monday, July 1, 2019.
During the meeting, President Kenyatta announced that Kenya has allocated 10 acres of land to South Sudan to build a dry port at the Inland Container Depot in Naivasha.
The dry port is expected to ease the movement of goods consigned to South Sudan, and the project is part of Kenya's efforts to fast-track the completion of the LAPSSET projects, which include the Lamu Port.
President Kenyatta assured President Kiir that the first berth of the Lamu Port will be ready by August, while berths 2 and 3 are expected to be completed by the end of 2020.
The two leaders also agreed to deepen their trade ties, including a plan for Kenya to hold a trade expo in Juba in November, which will showcase Kenyan businesspeople to South Sudan's economy.
They also reached an agreement to initiate efforts that will guide amicable resolution of disputes that may arise over their shared border, and announced that a ministerial team has concluded an MOU on delimitation and demarcation of common borders.
President Kenyatta also expressed his country's commitment to supporting the ongoing peace process in South Sudan, and said that the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan, if fully implemented, will benefit the entire continent.
