Kenya is set to make history at the Africa Cup of Nations with Peter Waweru, a JKUAT don, becoming the first Kenyan centre referee to officiate a match at the prestigious tournament.
Waweru will take charge of the Group D match between Namibia and two-time champions Ivory Coast on Monday at 7pm Kenyan time, assisted by fellow Kenyan Gilbert Cheruiyot and Lesotho's Soura Phatsoanne.
Waweru's appointment is a significant milestone for Kenyan football, coming after a life ban was handed to Aden Marwa, the country's only referee at the 2017 edition in Gabon, for allegedly accepting a bribe.
Waweru has previously officiated at the 2019 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Niger in February, his major tournament since getting the Fifa badge in 2017.
