On July 13, 2021, Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi was taken into custody by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) at their headquarters along Kiambu road.
The arrest comes after LSK CEO Mercy Wambua filed a complaint with the police, alleging that Havi assaulted her during a meeting on July 12, 2021.
However, Havi denied the allegations, stating that Wambua had forced her way into the boardroom during a meeting and attempted to record the proceedings without his consent.
The incident is the latest in a series of public disagreements between Havi and Wambua, which have been ongoing since July 9, 2021.
On that day, Havi released a statement accusing Wambua of preventing a proposed audit on the use of allocated funds and colluding with financial institutions to deny members statements of expenditure.
He also claimed that Wambua had failed to alter signatories to banks in which the society's accounts are registered, which had frustrated the society's efforts to access bank statements and compromised the planned internal audit.
According to Havi, Wambua had made over Ksh 70 million worth of transactions without following standard procedure or obtaining the approval of members.
