On 1 July, Liquid Telecom will launch a symbolic fibre digging inauguration in South Sudan, marking a significant breakthrough in foreign direct investment in the country. The event will be attended by His Excellency Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of South Sudan, and senior executives from Liquid Telecom.
According to Liquid Telecom, the fibre broadband network will connect South Sudan to the 'One Africa' broadband network, which spans over 70,000km across 13 African countries and the rest of the world. This network will provide reliable and affordable internet connectivity to nearly 13 million citizens of South Sudan, as well as thousands of businesses, government institutions, and non-governmental organisations.
The first phase of the project, scheduled to be completed by the end of 2019, will include a 300km fibre backbone operating from the border of Uganda, through South Sudan, to Juba. Multiple metro clusters will also support the capital city. The network will be expanded to other cities in subsequent phases, ultimately supporting the country's 13 million citizens.
