July 1, 2019, marked a somber day for Kenya as news broke of the passing of Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore.

Collymore had been battling Acute Myeloid Leukemia since 2017, when he took a sick leave and traveled to the UK for treatment.

After returning to Kenya in July 2018, he continued to receive treatment at the Aga Khan University Hospital.

According to a statement released by Safaricom, Collymore passed away in the early hours of Monday morning.

Media personality Jeff Koinange, a close friend of Collymore's, revealed in an interview that they had spent time together just two days prior to his death.

Koinange shared that Collymore had been informed by his doctors that he would be lucky to make it past July, and that he had accepted his fate.

Collymore will be buried in a private ceremony in Nairobi on July 2, followed by a public memorial service later in the week.
