On July 1, 2019, the Ecowas leaders gathered in Abuja for their 55th Ordinary Session, marking a significant milestone in regional integration.

President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger was elected as the new chair of the Ecowas Authority, taking over from President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria, who was commended for his unrelenting commitment to regional integration.

The Ecowas leaders also adopted ECO as the name of the single currency, which is set to be issued in January 2020, as per the revised roadmap.

According to President Issoufou, the revised roadmap still stipulates that the single currency will be issued in January 2020, and the assessment process will continue until then.

The meeting was attended by 13 out of 15 member states, with Cape Verde and Senegal represented by their respective ministers.
