On July 1, 2019, Kenya lost a dedicated supporter of football, Bob Collymore, the CEO of Safaricom, who had been battling leukemia.
Collymore's impact on sports, particularly football, was significant, as Safaricom pumped millions into reviving the Chapa Dimba tournament, which targets young and promising footballers from across the country.
The tournament, initially called Sakata ball, had been discontinued due to corruption-related issues in the previous regime. However, FKF president Nick Mwendwa successfully convinced Safaricom to resume sponsorship, and the tournament has since thrived.
FKF expressed its condolences to Collymore's family and friends, describing him as a 'dedicated supporter of the sport who believed in youth development and the growth of women's football.'
Collymore's legacy will be remembered for his commitment to promoting football in Kenya and his efforts to support the growth of the sport.
