On July 1, 2019, the University of Nairobi (UoN) council appointed Prof Isaac Mbeche as acting vice-chancellor, amidst a period of transition following the rejection of Prof Peter Mbithi's bid for automatic reappointment as VC for a second term.
According to a communication to staff and students, council chair Julia Ojiambo reassured the University of Nairobi community and stakeholders that the council is in charge and there is no cause for alarm.
Prof Mbeche, who was previously the deputy vice-chancellor in charge of finance, planning and development department, will take over the acting VC role.
Prof Mbithi, who had been serving as VC, will go on leave on July 6 to allow for an effective appointment process of a new vice-chancellor.
