On June 28, 2019, the University of Nairobi council replaced Prof Peter Mbithi with Deputy Vice-Chancellor Isaac Mbeche as a signatory for all its financial transactions, just a day after rejecting his bid for automatic reappointment as vice-chancellor for a second term.

Prof Mbithi, who was expected to go on terminal leave on July 6, 2019, was directed to hand over to Prof Mbeche, who will hold the position in an acting capacity.

According to a letter by council chair Julia Ojiambo, Prof Mbeche will be a mandatory signatory to all banking facilities for the university, effective June 28, 2019. This timing coincides with the usual date when staff at the University of Nairobi receive their salaries.

Staff at the University of Nairobi usually get their salaries by the 28th day of each month. The replacement of Prof Mbithi has raised concerns among staff, with sources indicating that a case challenging his replacement is likely to be filed in court this week.
