On July 1, 2019, Kenya lost a distinguished leader in the passing of Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore, who had been battling cancer for years.
Collymore's death sent shockwaves across the country, with hundreds of people taking to social media to pay their respects to the deceased and his family.
Celebrities who had the opportunity to converse with him or get to know him have all taken to social media to express their condolences.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga said, 'My condolences go out to the friends and family of Mr Bob Collymore as well as the entire Safaricom fraternity. Bob served our country with dedication and sustained us as a communication hub in Africa. May his soul rest in eternal peace.'
Deputy President William Ruto added, 'Collymore was exemplary, brilliant and courageous, especially in the manner he battled cancer. Condolences to his family, colleagues and friends. Rest In Peace.'
Chris Kirubi, a Kenyan businessman, tweeted, 'It is with deep sadness that I have learnt this morning news of the death of Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore. As a country, we’ve lost a distinguished leader who greatly contributed to national development. My condolences to family, friends and all Kenyans. Rest In Peace my friend.'
Other celebrities who paid their respects include Xtian dela, who said, 'A very sad day indeed. My thoughts go out to the family, friends, colleagues and all his loved ones. @bobcollymore was a great man, a great leader who build not only @SafaricomPLC but Kenya as a whole. Your spirit lives on Bob! Forever in our hearts.'
Julie Gichuru also paid tribute to Collymore, saying, 'Bob, you lived a full life with an open heart, with boldness & courage. Thank you for your leadership, passion & humour! Unforgettable. Now, rest rafiki, rest well. #RIPBob.'
