July 1, 2019 - Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore has passed away after a long battle with cancer. He was 61 years old.
According to a statement from Safaricom, Collymore passed away at his home on Monday morning, July 1, 2019.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has sent in his condolences, saying, "It is with deep sadness that I have this morning received news of the death of Safaricom CEO Mr Bob Collymore after years of battling cancer. As a country, we’ve lost a distinguished corporate leader whose contribution to our national wellbeing will be missed."
Collymore had been undergoing treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia since October 2017, when he traveled to the UK for treatment. He returned to Kenya in July 2018 and had been receiving treatment in different hospitals, including the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi.
"In recent weeks, his condition worsened and he succumbed to the cancer at his home in the early hours on Monday," Safaricom said in a statement.
Collymore leaves behind a wife and four children. The board of Safaricom PLC has extended its deepest condolences to his family, staff, partners, and the nation at large.
