Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore Passes Away After Long Battle with Leukemia

On July 1, 2019, Safaricom Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Robert (Bob) William Collymore passed away at his home in Nairobi after a long battle with leukemia.

Collymore had been undergoing treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) since October 2017, when he traveled to the United Kingdom (UK) for treatment. He returned to Kenya in July 2018 and continued his treatment at different hospitals, including the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi.

According to Safaricom, Collymore's condition worsened in recent weeks, and he succumbed to the cancer at his home in the early hours of July 1.

"It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing away of Robert (Bob) William Collymore, CEO of Safaricom, which occurred at his home in Nairobi on the morning of July 1, 2019," the company said in a statement.
