It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Safaricom Chief Executive Officer Bob Collymore, who died at his home on Monday morning.

Collymore had been battling Acute Myloid Leukemia (AML) for several months and had been in and out of the country seeking treatment.

According to Safaricom's Board Chairman Nicholas Nganga, Collymore passed away after a long battle with cancer.

"It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing away of Robert (Bob) William Collymore CEO Safaricom which occurred at his home," Nganga said in a statement.

Collymore had been receiving treatment at the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi and had been out of the country several times for treatment, including a trip to the United Kingdom in October 2017.

He leaves behind a wife and four children.

"On behalf of the Board of Safaricom, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, staff, partners and the nation at large who he served selflessly with joy," Nganga said.

Collymore had been the CEO of Safaricom since 2010.
