Published on July 1, 2019, Kenyan police are making progress in their investigation into the source of a fake letter claiming a murder plot against Deputy President William Ruto.
According to officials, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has provided the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) with preliminary findings on the source of the letter and those responsible for uploading it on social media platforms.
DCI boss George Kinoti has expressed readiness to question Deputy President Ruto on the claims, stating that the suspects' gadgets, including mobile phones, will be recovered for further scrutiny.
Two individuals have been identified as the most probable suspects who either authored the fake letter or uploaded it on social media.
Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji defended the involvement of the FBI, saying the agency's expertise was necessary to establish the origin of the letter and prevent any perception of bias.
Police have concluded that the letter is a forgery and are now working on motives, including the possibility of diverting attention or seeking sympathy.
