Kenya Power employees, brokers, and customers are among those summoned by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in a probe sparked by public outcry over inflated power bills.

DCI George Kinoti released a list of those to be questioned, including 119 companies and 85 individuals, who are expected to present themselves for questioning this month.

The DCI has been investigating a case where 5,000 customers benefited from the alleged fraud, with some domestic users receiving monthly bills as high as Sh300,000.

According to Kinoti, the racketeers perfected a system where they over-billed customers, with some cases showing an inflation of over Sh500 for every consumer.

Published on July 1, 2019, The Standard reported that the police had officers posing as customers, employees of Kenya Power, and a mobile subscriber company to spy on transactions and pass intelligence.

Former Law Society of Kenya CEO Apollo Mboya had sued Kenya Power in January last year, protesting that the firm abused its market dominance to overcharge clients.

It has emerged that cartels working from the heart of the country's electricity hub may have stolen Sh150 billion from unsuspecting customers in five years.
