On a sweltering day at the Spielberg circuit, Max Verstappen secured his sixth career victory and Red Bull's first win since the 2006 Hungarian Grand Prix, when he triumphed in the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday.

Verstappen, who won last year's race at the same circuit, recovered from a poor start to charge through the field and battle past Ferrari's Charles Leclerc with two laps remaining.

Leclerc felt that he was given insufficient space as Verstappen forced him wide off the circuit, and the move was immediately announced as under investigation by the stewards.

Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas came home third, ahead of Sebastian Vettel in the second Ferrari and defending five-time champion Lewis Hamilton in the second Mercedes.

Hamilton suffered front wing and heating problems, while British rookie Lando Norris was an excellent sixth for McLaren, ahead of Pierre Gasly in the second Red Bull.

Verstappen's victory brought a thrilling end to the season's opening six races, which had seen Mercedes dominate.

"After that start, I thought my race was over," Verstappen said. "But after the pit-stops we were flying. It was hard racing - and if that's not allowed, what's the point in racing in F1. We may as well go home."

— Max Verstappen His dramatic overtaking move was a highlight of the race, which was a perfect antidote for the sport after the previous week's dreary procession in France.
