On June 30, 2019, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) conducted a raid on an illegal alcohol processing plant in Nairobi, arresting eight people in the process.

During the raid, the DCI confiscated assorted boxes of alcoholic beverages and spirits, including Star Spirit and Blue Ice Vodka, which were found to have KRA Corporate stickers.

The raid is part of a long-running crackdown on manufacturers of counterfeit products that put the lives of millions at risk and deny companies making genuine products millions of shillings on revenue.

According to the DCI, the raid was made possible following a tip-off from members of the public.

Previous reports have identified areas around Kariobangi light industries as the headquarters of counterfeit criminal enterprise in Nairobi.

It is worth noting that in February this year, officers from the DCI and Kenya Revenue Authority raided Africa Spirit Limited over tax evasion claims, arresting the production manager of its Thika factory after consignments of counterfeit excise stamps were found in the plant.
