As of June 26th, 2.7 million taxpayers had filed their taxes, falling short of the target of 4 million. The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has extended its working hours to facilitate the process, with customs offices open 24 hours and iTax Service Centers operating from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM.
The KRA has urged all taxpayers to utilize the available platforms to ensure compliance and avoid penalties for late or failure to submit a tax return. This will enable them to acquire a Tax Compliance Certificate (TCC), a critical document in accessing services.
According to official data, 2.9 million Kenyans worked in the formal sector last year, compared to 14.8 million in the informal sector. The Treasury has announced plans to pursue workers and business people who failed to declare their income to the State in a drive aimed at plugging revenue shortfalls.
