June 30, 2012 - A devastating road accident occurred on Saturday night along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, claiming the lives of four family members.
The accident, which happened near Makindu, involved a saloon car traveling from Mombasa to Nairobi colliding head-on with a lorry.
According to Makueni police chief Joseph ole Napeiyan, four people died instantly, while the lorry driver and another person were critically injured and rushed to Makindu hospital for treatment.
The deceased were all passengers in the saloon car, including two sisters and two brothers.
Separately, seven people died in an accident involving a matatu and a trailer on the Eldoret-Webuye highway on Friday night.
The accident occurred at Lwandeti area, leaving seven other passengers with serious injuries.
Police reported that the accident occurred when a motorbike lost control and rammed into the on-coming matatu, leading to the collision with the truck.
The matatu was headed to Bungoma from Eldoret, while the truck was headed towards Eldoret from Kampala, Uganda.
