As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change, Kenya is taking a bold step towards a cleaner and more sustainable future. The country's green energy initiatives have put it on the path to universal clean power access, a goal that is not only environmentally friendly but also economically viable.

According to the World Bank Energy Progress Report 2019, published on June 30, 2019, over three quarters of Kenyans currently have access to electricity, with an annual increase rate of 6.4 per cent. This is faster than all of its East African neighbours.

The government's efforts to achieve this goal are being led by the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (Rerec), which was established in March this year through the 2019 Energy Act. Rerec's mission is to establish clean energy centres in all 47 counties, especially those with limited power access.

Developing renewable energy sources will underpin all of Rerec's initiatives, which is in line with President Uhuru's environmental policy. The corporation aims to earn the government more than Sh1 billion every year from sales to Kenya Power, with the newly established solar power plant in Garissa being a prime example. The plant has a high capacity of 55 megawatts and will generate revenues exceeding Sh431 million.

These new energy projects are not only beneficial for the environment but also for the economy. They will create jobs and get more Kenyans on the grid, helping to achieve the Vision 2030 development goals. In Lamu, for instance, the planned 1,050 megawatt coal plant will help diversify employment and provide an affordable and reliable way to industrialise Kenya.

Government funding for these projects is also expected to boost tourism and help the local economy. The connection of Manda, Lamu's neighbouring island, to the national power grid for the first time will be a real
