Peru's goalkeeper Pedro Gallese made a crucial penalty save to deny Luis Suarez, and Edison Flores scored the decisive penalty as Peru defeated Uruguay 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a 0-0 draw.
Peru will now face Chile in the semifinals in Porto Alegre on Wednesday.
Peru's coach Ricardo Gareca praised his team's character after the match, saying, "It was a tightly fought match against really tough opponents. I stress that we showed a lot of character to take them on."
Gareca also reserved special praise for Gallese, who had come under fire for a woeful performance in Peru's previous match against Brazil.
"Gallese made a difference," Gareca said. "Gallese is a goalkeeper who has given us much satisfaction and he's always been there in the important moments."
Uruguay's coach Oscar Tabarez was making no excuses for the defeat, saying, "You can't explain the result, it was due to many things."
Uruguay's captain Diego Godin lamented the team's inability to turn their clear superiority and a number of gilt edged chances into goals.
"I'm proud of my teammates, it's a spectacular group. They gave it their all," Godin said. "We had high hopes, but football isn't always fair. We were unfairly eliminated. They were better on the penalties."
