Published on June 29, 2019, Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa sparked controversy with her proposal to arrest pregnant school girls in Kilifi.
Speaking during the Annual Malindi Education day celebrations at Barani Secondary School, Jumwa argued that both teenage boys and girls should face equal punishment for engaging in underage sex, which is illegal in Kenya.
'Whoever is taken to court in cases of teenage pregnancy is a boy, the law cuts both sides; all girls and boys should be arrested if we want to solve the problem,' she said.
However, Jumwa clarified that her proposal does not apply to cases of defilement, where the boy should be prosecuted alone.
She also proposed an amendment to the National Government Constituency Development Funds Act to facilitate payment of full scholarships for bright needy students from poor families.
