On June 29, 2019, three students from Kinondo Mixed Day Secondary School in Kwale County made headlines after winning the top spot in the Coast region science and engineering fair.
The students, Rai Ahmed, Peter Sadera, and Saumu Zamu, showcased their creativity and innovation by developing a simple solar food dehydrator and a solar-powered honey extractor.
The solar-powered honey extractor, made from a glass box, collection chamber, aluminum sheet, motor, wire mesh, plastic container, wood, switch, and a tap, is a game-changer for beekeepers in the extraction of honey from honeycombs.
According to their biology and agriculture teacher, Haron Murithi, the food dehydrator would come in handy in the preservation of food by removing moisture from the food.
Speaking on behalf of her fellow innovators, Saumu Zamu said despite many challenges, they beat the odds to innovate and emerge the winners.
