Governor Cyprian Awiti of Homa Bay County was rushed to Agha Khan Hospital in Kisumu on June 27, 2019, after experiencing severe eye problems.

According to reports, Awiti was initially taken to the hospital in Kisumu before being transferred to the Nairobi branch for further treatment.

Awiti had returned from a medical leave in Germany and was seen in public for the first time on June 18, 2019, after being away for several months.

He had announced his intention to retire from politics in 2022, but has since stated that he will continue with his duties until his term comes to an end.
