On May 9, 2021, it was reported that Kenya Pipeline Corporation (KPRL) was facing another challenge in selling Turkana crude oil, a year after Tullow Oil's pilot project ended.

The pilot project, which was launched in 2018, aimed to test the viability of transporting crude oil from Turkana to Mombasa. However, the project was stopped in June 2020 after the two-year contract expired.
