On May 3, 2021, we celebrated the rich cultural heritage of Kenya through its talented individuals who have made a name for themselves globally. From the world of sports to film and fashion, these Kenyan-born celebrities have left an indelible mark on the international scene.
Meet Linton Maina, a 21-year-old footballer born to a Kenyan father and German mother. Despite being born in Berlin, Maina has proudly represented his Kenyan roots, making his debut in the Hannover 96 team on March 18, 2018.
Next up is Malaika Firth, a 26-year-old British model of Kenyan descent. She became one of the first models in her 20s to be booked by Prada for their advertising campaign. Firth is unapologetic about her Kenyan heritage and has been making waves in the fashion industry.
Robert Kenyatta, a talented musician, started his journey by playing on his mother's oatmeal boxes and pots and pans. He eventually bought his first Conga Drum at age 12, using money earned from collecting used bottles. Kenyatta's passion for music knows no bounds, and he continues to inspire with his unique sound.
Deep Roy, a veteran actor, was born in Nairobi, Kenya, to Indian parents. With over 20 films and 11 television shows under his belt, Roy has been a household name since 1976. He was one of the first Kenyan actors to make it big in Hollywood.
Lastly, we have Warsan Shire, a British writer, poet, editor, and teacher born to Somali parents in Kenya. In 2013, she was awarded the inaugural Brunel University African Poetry Prize, chosen from a shortlist of six candidates out of 655 entries. Shire's talent has earned her recognition globally, and Kenya is proud to call her one of its own.
