On July 3, 2020, Liban Yousuf Osman, the deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Somaliland, expressed hope for strengthened ties and cooperation between Kenya and Somaliland in a tweet.

Junet Mohamed, the Suna East MP and director of elections for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), led Kenya's delegation to the high-profile meeting in Somaliland. During the visit, Mohamed held talks with Osman.

Osman's tweet on July 3, 2020, highlighted the two nations' desire to strengthen their relationship. 'It was my utmost pleasure to receive the delegation From the Republic of Kenya led by Junet Mohamed. They had a wonderful one-day visit to the Republic Somaliland aimed to strengthen ties and cooperation of the two nations,' Osman said.

Junet Mohamed's profile has risen since the 2018 handshake between ODM leader Raila Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta. In November 2019, he was chosen as the master of ceremonies during the public launch of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) at the Bomas of Kenya, further highlighting his growing influence.

Some reactions to Mohamed's visit to Somaliland included calls for Somaliland recognition and warnings against working against the government of Somalia.
