On June 26, 2020, a somber ceremony took place in Gitega, Burundi, as the country bid farewell to its former President, Pierre Nkurunziza.
Just two months after stepping down from office, Nkurunziza passed away due to heart complications, according to the government. However, there were concerns that he might have died from COVID-19, given the circumstances surrounding his death.
His wife, who had tested positive for the virus just days before his passing, was allowed to leave the hospital after his death.
Several African leaders attended the funeral, paying their respects to the late president.
